What you'll study

This degree covers a broad range of musical disciplines so you graduate with practical, technical and intellectual skills. Core areas typically include aural and musicianship training, individual performance lessons, ensemble playing, composition and arranging, and music technology and audio production. Academic modules explore music theory, analysis, music history and popular and world musics, while option modules allow you to focus on areas such as songwriting, film music, improvisation, community music or ethnomusicology.

Teaching methods combine one-to-one tuition, seminars, workshops, studio sessions and ensemble rehearsals. Assessment is a mix of performances and recitals, recorded portfolios, compositions and creative projects, written essays and examinations. Many students complete a substantial final-year project or major recital that showcases their principal area of study.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an appropriate level of secondary education qualifications (A-levels, BTEC, or recognised international equivalents). Practical ability and musical experience are important: applicants will usually be asked to submit a recorded performance or portfolio and may be invited to an audition and an interview. Prior study in music or performed experience (graded instrument/vocal exams, ensemble membership, songwriting credits) is advantageous but mature applicants with significant practical experience are also considered. Some offers may include requirements in English (or equivalent) at GCSE level or comparable standard.

Graduates move into a wide range of careers across the creative and cultural sectors. Common pathways include performing and recording, composing and arranging, music production and audio engineering, music education and further teacher training (including PGCE routes), community and youth music leadership, arts administration and event management, and roles in media, broadcasting and music publishing. Many alumni also pursue postgraduate study in performance, composition, musicology or music technology, or develop freelance portfolios combining several of these activities.
