What you'll study

The programme covers the core areas of psychology alongside methodological training, giving you a balance of theory, empirical investigation and applied topics. Across the course you will study modules such as biological and cognitive psychology, developmental and social psychology, individual differences and personality, psychopathology, and lifespan approaches to mental health and wellbeing. A substantial emphasis is placed on research methods and statistics, including experimental design, quantitative analysis (e.g. SPSS/R) and qualitative approaches, and you will undertake practical laboratory- and field-based work.

Typical course structure includes foundational first-year modules that introduce psychological science and research skills, intermediate modules that deepen knowledge in specialist areas, and final-year options that allow you to focus on topics such as neuropsychology, clinical psychology, forensic psychology, perception, learning and memory. The final year normally includes an independent research project or dissertation supervised by academic staff, allowing you to design, run and report your own empirical study.

Students may also have the option to take a placement year in a relevant organisation or to spend a year abroad, depending on the route chosen, which helps develop employability and applied experience.

Entry requirements

Keele welcomes applicants with a variety of qualifications. Typical entry expects a successful background in secondary education with achievement in relevant subjects; psychology is open to applicants from scientific and non-scientific A-levels and equivalent qualifications. BTEC, International Baccalaureate and other recognised UK and international qualifications are considered. You will usually need English language competence at a level sufficient for academic study; previously completed psychology modules are helpful but not essential.

Applicants are assessed on academic performance, personal statement and any supplementary information; some applicants may be invited to interview. Mature students and those with relevant work experience are encouraged to apply and are considered against the same academic criteria.
