What you'll study

This program combines theoretical foundations, applied practice and supervised field education to develop the knowledge and skills required for professional social work. Core study areas include social work theory and ethics, human development and social determinants, social policy and advocacy, culturally responsive practice (including Indigenous perspectives), mental health and trauma-informed approaches, working with individuals, families, groups and communities, and research methods for social work.

Teaching typically mixes lectures, tutorials, practice laboratories and small-group learning. A key component is supervised field education: students complete multiple placements with community, health or government agencies where they undertake assessed practice under an approved supervisor. The degree also includes a capstone or practice integration subject that consolidates practice learning and professional readiness.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a recognised undergraduate degree in any discipline. Selection commonly considers academic achievement at undergraduate level and may take into account relevant professional or volunteer experience in human services. Because the program prepares students for practice in vulnerable contexts, successful applicants must be able to meet professional suitability requirements such as background checks, immunisation or health screening, and any jurisdictional checks required for field placement.

International applicants must meet the University's English language requirements. The university may also require applicants to attend an interview or submit a personal statement outlining commitment to social work values and relevant experience.

Typical employment destinations include child and family services, child protection and family support, mental health services, hospitals and health settings, aged and disability services, homelessness and housing services, community development and non-government organisations, schools and youth services, and government policy or program roles. The professional qualifying nature of the degree enables graduates to pursue membership or accreditation pathways with relevant professional bodies and to practise as accredited social workers where registration or accreditation applies.
