What you'll study

The MSW curriculum combines foundation social work knowledge with advanced practice content. Core areas typically include human behaviour and the social environment, social welfare policy and services, research methods for evidence-informed practice, and ethical practice frameworks. In advanced study students select a practice focus—often clinical practice and/or community practice—and study specialised topics such as assessment and diagnosis, clinical interventions, trauma-informed care, family and group therapy, program development, community organising, and policy practice.

A central component of the programme is supervised field education. Students complete sequential practicum placements in community agencies, hospitals, schools, mental health settings or child welfare organisations to integrate classroom learning with direct practice. Advanced standing is usually available for applicants who hold a qualifying Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), allowing completion in an accelerated timeframe through recognition of prior learning and practicum hours.

Additional coursework frequently covers cultural competence, working with diverse populations, substance use and co-occurring disorders, crisis intervention, and leadership in human services. Electives and seminars allow students to tailor study to interests such as gerontology, school social work, behavioural health, or nonprofit management.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Typical admissions materials include a transcript, a personal statement or statement of purpose explaining professional goals and fit with social work, and at least two professional or academic references. Some programmes request a résumé or CV and may interview shortlisted candidates.

Many programmes expect a minimum undergraduate GPA; applicants who do not meet this threshold may be considered with additional supporting materials or evidence of relevant professional experience. Applicants with a BSW from a CSWE-accredited programme are usually eligible for advanced standing, which requires submission of the BSW transcript and documentation of practicum hours. Because field placements often require background checks, health screenings and immunisation documentation, admitted students should be prepared to meet those clearance requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates of the MSW are prepared for licensure and a wide range of professional roles. Common career paths include clinical social worker or therapist in outpatient and inpatient settings, school social worker, mental health clinician, child and family services practitioner, case manager, substance misuse counsellor, community organiser, and policy or programme manager in public and nonprofit sectors.

With an MSW and the required post‑graduate supervised hours, many graduates pursue licensure as a clinical social worker (such as LCSW or equivalent depending on jurisdiction) to provide independent mental health services. Others move into leadership, supervision, grant writing, or program development roles within health systems, child welfare agencies, hospitals and community organisations.
