What you'll study

The honours programme builds on core social work knowledge and professional practice, combining theoretical study, research methods and extended field education. Core areas typically include social work theory and history, human development and psychosocial assessment, social policy and community development, diversity and cultural competence (including Indigenous perspectives), ethics and professional practice, and evidence-based interventions across the lifespan.

Students undertake advanced units in research methods, quantitative and qualitative approaches, and a substantial honours thesis or major research project under faculty supervision. Practice learning is a major component: students complete supervised field placements in community services, health, mental health, child protection, disability and aged care settings, allowing application of practice skills, casework, group work and interprofessional collaboration.

Entry requirements

Admission to the honours year generally requires completion of an accredited Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent degree with a specified minimum academic performance (for example, a credit average or higher). Applicants may also be considered if they hold equivalent professional experience and recognised prior learning. Selection can include review of academic transcripts, a personal statement, and referees.

Because social work is a regulated and practice-oriented profession, students must meet professional suitability requirements for placement. This commonly includes a clear working with children/vulnerable people check, a national police check, evidence of required immunisations, and adherence to ACU's professional conduct and fitness-for-practice policies.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible for professional social work practice and often work in child, youth and family services, community and non‑government organisations, government policy and welfare agencies, health and mental health services, disability services and aged care. The honours year provides a foundation for roles that value research skills and critical analysis, including case management, program development, policy roles, advocacy and program evaluation.

Completing honours also provides a pathway to postgraduate study, such as coursework or research master's degrees and preparation for doctoral research for those interested in academic or specialist research careers.
