This master’s programme develops advanced theoretical and practical skills in contemporary chemistry, combining taught modules with a substantial research project. It suits graduates with a strong background in chemistry or closely related sciences who want to progress into research, specialist industrial roles or doctoral study.
The programme builds on core areas of modern chemistry and offers options to specialise according to research interests. Typical taught modules cover advanced organic chemistry, advanced inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and spectroscopy, analytical and instrumental methods, and contemporary topics such as materials chemistry, supramolecular chemistry and environmental/green chemistry. Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars and laboratory classes, with an emphasis on developing practical skills in synthesis, characterisation and data analysis.
A substantial component of the MSc is an independent research project carried out under the supervision of a Department of Chemistry academic. The project allows you to apply experimental and/or computational methods to an open research question, leading to a written thesis and an oral examination or viva. Practical training also includes safe laboratory practice, scientific writing and presentation skills, and, where appropriate, training in advanced instrumentation (e.g. NMR, mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, chromatography).
Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised Bachelor’s degree with honours in chemistry or a closely related subject (for example, biochemistry, chemical engineering or materials science) demonstrating strong performance in core chemistry modules. Candidates with a lower second-class degree plus substantial relevant laboratory experience, or candidates holding a professional qualification with appropriate background, may be considered on an individual basis.
International applicants whose first language is not English may be required to demonstrate English proficiency through an approved test or qualification. Applicants will be asked to provide academic transcripts, a CV, and references; shortlisted applicants may be invited to an interview with potential supervisors. Additional laboratory experience or a short preparatory course may be recommended for applicants who need to refresh key practical skills.
