What you'll study

This MSc combines core public-health disciplines with applied methods and a substantial independent research project. Typical taught modules cover epidemiology and infectious disease control, biostatistics and data analysis, health promotion and behavioural interventions, health systems and policy, environmental and occupational health, and research methods and ethics. Students will also study practical topics such as health programme planning and evaluation, surveillance and outbreak investigation, and risk communication.

The programme ordinarily culminates in a dissertation or major research project that allows students to design and conduct primary or secondary research under academic supervision. Learning is delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies and fieldwork placements, with an emphasis on analysing real-world public-health problems and applying evidence to practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically expected to hold a recognised undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as medicine, nursing, allied health, biomedical sciences, pharmacy, psychology, social sciences or a related field. Relevant professional experience in health, social care or public-sector roles can be advantageous and may be considered alongside academic qualifications.

Applicants whose first language is not English will normally be required to demonstrate proficiency in English to the Faculty's accepted standard. Candidates may be interviewed and asked to provide a personal statement outlining their motivation and any relevant experience. Specific entry requirements and accreditation of prior learning considerations are available from the Faculty admissions office.

Graduates of the MSc in Public Health pursue a wide range of careers across health systems, government, non-governmental organisations and research. Typical roles include public-health practitioner, epidemiologist, health promotion officer, policy analyst, environmental health officer, health programme manager and research associate.
