What you'll study

The MPA combines core theoretical foundations with applied skills in public management and policy. Typical modules cover public administration theory, public policy analysis, public financial management, human resource management in the public sector, governance and accountability, and research methods for public service. Students also study specialised topics such as decentralisation and local government, ethics and leadership in the public sector, project and programme management, and the use of information and communication technologies in public administration.

Programme structure normally includes taught coursework followed by an independent research project or dissertation. Coursework often comprises a mix of lectures, seminars, case studies and practical assignments, and assessments may include essays, policy briefs, group projects and examinations. The research component develops applied research skills and allows students to investigate a policy or administrative issue relevant to Ghana and the wider region.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a recognised first degree. Typical entry standards include a good honours degree (often a Second Class Upper or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as political science, public administration, economics, law, sociology or related social sciences. Candidates with a Second Class Lower degree plus significant relevant work experience, or recognised professional qualifications with substantial professional experience, may also be considered.

Applicants whose first language is not English may be required to demonstrate proficiency in English. All applicants must submit certified academic transcripts, a curriculum vitae, and references; some applicants may be asked to attend an interview. The University may also consider relevant public sector or development work experience as part of the admission decision.

Career prospects

Graduates of the MPA typically move into leadership and specialist roles across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Common career paths include positions in the civil service and ministries, local government and municipal administration, public policy analysis and planning units, donor and development agencies, international organisations, and non-governmental organisations. Other roles include public finance and budget specialists, project and programme managers, human resource managers for public institutions, governance and anti-corruption practitioners, and policy consultants.

The degree also provides a foundation for doctoral study and academic careers in public administration, governance and policy research.
