The Biochemistry programme provides integrated coursework in chemistry, biology and mathematics together with extensive laboratory and research experience. Early study builds a foundation in general chemistry, calculus, physics and introductory biology. Core biochemistry and molecular courses typically cover organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry concepts relevant to biomolecules, enzymology, metabolic pathways, molecular genetics, cell biology and structural biology.
Laboratory and practical training is emphasised throughout. Applicants should have a strong secondary-school record with particular strength in mathematics (calculus if available), chemistry and biology. Successful applicants typically have completed coursework in general and advanced science, including laboratory experience if possible. High-level qualifications such as A-levels, IB, or equivalent secondary credentials are acceptable; subject-specific preparation in chemistry and mathematics is important.
WPI considers the whole application, including transcripts, teacher recommendations, and any research, internship or extracurricular experience in science. Standardised test policies may vary; applicants should consult the university for current guidance on test reporting. For students whose first language is not English, proof of English proficiency is normally required.
Graduates with a Biochemistry BS are prepared for a wide range of careers in biotechnology and the life sciences. Common early-career roles include research technician, laboratory scientist, quality control analyst, product development associate, and manufacturing or process support in biotech and pharmaceutical companies.
