What you'll study

The programme emphasises close reading, theoretical engagement and independent research across literary periods, genres and global contexts. Core work typically covers literary history, critical theory, research methods and textual studies. Students choose from electives that may include modern and contemporary poetry and fiction, drama, colonial and postcolonial literatures, gender and queer studies, comparative and world literatures, environmental humanities, and media and cultural studies.

Teaching is delivered through small seminars, lecture modules, workshops and supervised research. A substantial component of the MA is the independent dissertation or major research project supervised by faculty, supported by a course in research methodology and options in archival work, digital humanities tools or fieldwork where relevant.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a bachelor’s degree with a good academic record in English, humanities or a closely related discipline. Typical application materials include academic transcripts, a statement of purpose outlining research interests, a writing sample (such as an undergraduate essay), and academic references. Candidates whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in English according to the university’s standard language requirements. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an interview or written assessment as part of the selection process.
