Offered since autumn 2020, this is a four-year binational doctoral programme at the University of the Arts Bremen delivered in cooperation with partner institutions in Leiden/The Hague, Groningen, and Gothenburg. The programme integrates applied research, artistic practice and theoretical-scientific grounding, with individual supervision to support practice-based artistic and design research situated at the intersections of arts, design and the sciences. The course is taught in English and explicitly prepares researchers to operate in international contexts.

What you'll study

Doctoral candidates carry out independent artistic-scientific research projects that are grounded in their own artistic or design practice. Emphasis is placed on practice as the basis for research activities and knowledge production, critical reflection on methods and theoretical approaches, and establishing work internationally. The programme combines artistic and design practice, methodological reflection and theoretical anchoring, and offers individual support for project development.

Entry requirements

The programme is explicitly aimed at applicants who hold an artistic or design master’s degree or an artistic diploma. Candidates must be prepared to undertake an English-language, practice-led doctoral project within the binational framework.
