The MAT totals 42 credit hours and combines core education courses, a content-area methods course, field seminars and a practicum. Core and practicum courses listed in the course catalog include:

A sample sequencing places Principles of the Social Curriculum, Adolescent Development, Technology Integration and Literacy in the Content Areas in an eight-week summer term; methods, exceptional learners, assessment and early/mid field seminars in fall; and advanced instruction, action research, advanced field seminar and the nine-credit student teaching internship in spring.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree. Admission and progression in the MAT require enrollment in the Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) and candidates must obtain and hold a Pre-Service Certificate from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) for the duration of the program. The program is aimed at those seeking initial certification in the specified secondary content areas.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for initial certification to teach grades 6–12 in biology, broad field science, English, history or mathematics. The curriculum combines subject-matter deepening with practical classroom experience; YHC coordinates local placements across North Georgia and the southern Appalachian region to provide supervised field experiences and student teaching. Candidates seeking licensure outside Georgia should review state-specific requirements and reciprocity procedures.

Tuition for the one-year MAT program is listed at $9,000, inclusive of course materials. Students may apply for federal financial aid by completing the FAFSA; additional funding information and contacts are provided by the college.
