What you'll study

The curriculum focuses on pedagogical knowledge, curriculum and subject content, assessment, classroom management, and professional responsibilities. Candidates are expected to:

• Provide learning experiences aligned to state and local standards using research-based strategies.
• Engage students in active learning and address individual learning differences.
• Use a variety of assessment strategies, analyze assessment data, and use results to inform instruction.
• Create and maintain a well-managed, safe academic environment.
• Demonstrate professional ethics, pursue professional growth, and communicate with stakeholders to enhance learning.

Program delivery is hybrid: most class meetings occur synchronously online, supplemented by six scheduled on-campus seminar days held across the summer, fall and spring terms. It is possible to hold a provisional teaching certificate and be teaching while taking graduate courses at LaGrange. The program offers both MAT (Pedagogy) routes for middle/high or P–12 content areas and an MAT Elementary Education route for PK–5 certification.

Entry requirements

Career prospects

Graduates complete the MAT and initial certification in roughly 13 months, enabling them to enter teaching positions and begin earning master’s-level pay once certified. The program’s structure supports rapid transition into classroom roles at elementary, middle, or high school levels across a variety of content areas.
