What Is the APF Canada Media Fellowship?
The Media Fellowship Program by APF Canada is a part of its Research Grants Program and is funded by an endowment from the Government of Canada. Since its inception, it has supported nearly 100 Canadian journalists, including well-known media figures like Carol Off, John Ivison, and Nathan VanderKlippe.
The fellowship allows reporters to spend time in Asia, conducting on-the-ground research and storytelling that enhances the Canadian public's understanding of the social, economic, technological, and political landscapes in countries such as China, Japan, India, South Korea, Indonesia, and more.
Degree Level
Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada Media Fellowship 2025 is available to undertake Fellowship level programs at Canada Universities.

- Supply chain resilience
- Maritime and energy security
- Trade and investment
- Space and Arctic affairs

Eligibility Criteria
Who Can Apply?
The 2025 Media Fellowship is open to:
- Canadian journalists (citizens or permanent residents)
- Reporters, columnists, broadcasters, or freelancers working in print, online, TV, or radio
- Individuals with at least two years of professional experience
- Those with a track record of publication or broadcast in Canadian media
Applicants must also be eligible for travel visas to the countries they plan to visit for reporting.
Note: Previous recipients are only eligible to reapply after three years.
Fellowship Deliverables
Awardees of the APF Canada Media Fellowship are expected to produce:
- At least three original stories, with one designed specifically for digital platforms
- A social media strategy promoting the stories across platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook
- One short video, podcast, or blog post summarizing the experience and published on the APF Canada website
In addition, recipients are expected to submit a wrap-up report of 700–1,000 words and may be invited to present their findings at APF Canada's Vancouver or Toronto office.
Selection Criteria
A jury formed by APF Canada will evaluate the applications based on:
- Significance and relevance of the topic
- Feasibility of the proposed reporting project
- Potential audience impact
- Applicant’s professional experience and storytelling capabilities
The Foundation aims to support journalism that contributes to stronger Canada-Asia engagement and highlights underreported or emerging issues in the region.

Interested applicants must submit:
- A 500–750-word proposal outlining the story theme, its importance to Canadian audiences, and how the content will be executed and published.
- A detailed budget (up to CAD $10,000)
- A current CV
- Two samples of previous journalistic work (published articles, video, audio, etc.)
- A letter from a Canadian media outlet editor or producer, showing interest in publishing the resulting stories
