Applications are now open for the 2026–27 CSRS Graduate Fellowships at the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society (CSRS), University of Victoria, Canada. These prestigious one-year fellowships provide graduate students with a unique opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary research exploring religion and its relationship to society and culture.

About the Fellowship

The CSRS Graduate Fellowships support research that examines religion in connection with ethics, health, environment, public policy, gender, sexuality, technology, conflict, art, literature, media, law, and the natural sciences. Religion does not need to be the central focus, but it must be a significant component of the applicant’s research.

This program fosters a vibrant community of scholars engaged in the academic and social life of the Centre, promoting interdisciplinary dialogue on issues related to religion and contemporary society.

Eligible Nationalities

Open to students of all nationalities.

Priority may be given to students currently enrolled at the University of Victoria (UVic), though external candidates are also welcome to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in an MA or PhD program at UVic or another recognized university.
  • Have completed all coursework and be in the writing stage of their thesis or dissertation.
  • Demonstrate a research focus that aligns with the CSRS mandate.
  • Students in one-year MA programs are eligible if they are in the writing stage.
  • Applicants who previously held a CSRS MA award may reapply only after enrolling in a PhD program.
  • PhD students may receive a CSRS fellowship only once.
  • Ensure their research complies with the UVic Human Ethics Review Board if involving human subjects.

Applicants must submit their application via email to csrs@uvic.ca by November 10, 2025, addressed to Dr. Rachel Brown, Director.

  • Completed Graduate Student Fellowship Application Form (available on the CSRS website)
  • Current CV
  • University transcripts (copies accepted)
  • Two letters of recommendation (from the supervisor and another professor, sent directly via email to csrs@uvic.ca)
  • Applications will be reviewed by the CSRS Program Committee in December 2025.

Fellowship Conditions

  • Fellows must give at least one public lecture or seminar based on their research.
