What you'll study

This programme combines core professional studies with subject-focused curriculum and early years pedagogy. You will study how young children learn across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the transition into Key Stage 1, with emphasis on early language and communication, phonics, early mathematics, scientific enquiry, creative and physical development, and the foundation subjects.

• Professional Practice and Teaching Standards – how to plan, teach, assess and reflect in line with the Teachers’ Standards and expectations for QTS.
• Early Years Pedagogy – child development, play-based learning, observation and assessment in EYFS, and transition practices between early years and Key Stage 1.
• Subject Knowledge and Curriculum – practical approaches to teaching literacy (including phonics), numeracy, science and the wider primary curriculum in early years contexts.
• Inclusion, SEND and Behaviour – strategies for inclusive classrooms, supporting children with additional needs, and positive behaviour management.
• Assessment for Learning – formative and summative assessment, using assessment to inform planning and communicate progress to parents and colleagues.
• Research-informed Practice – engagement with educational research and evidence to develop effective classroom practice and continuous professional development.

The programme is delivered through a combination of university-based seminars and workshops, practical skills sessions (for example phonics teaching and maths mastery techniques), and substantial school placements. Placements take place in a range of early years and primary settings and are assessed through lesson observations, written assignments and professional portfolios leading to the award of QTS on successful completion.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree from a recognised university at a minimum standard consistent with postgraduate teacher training entry requirements. In addition you will be required to demonstrate GCSE-level qualifications (or recognised equivalents) in English and mathematics; some routes also require a science qualification. Relevant experience working with young children in a school or early years setting is strongly advised and often required to demonstrate suitability for the profession.

• Enhanced criminal records check (DBS) and satisfactory health clearance are required prior to placement.
• Selection typically involves written tasks, an interview and assessment of interpersonal and communication skills, together with evidence of understanding of early years education.
• International applicants should provide equivalent academic and English language evidence as required by UK teacher training regulations.

Career prospects

Graduates exit the programme with Qualified Teacher Status and are prepared to teach in early years and Key Stage 1 classrooms. Typical career pathways include classroom teacher roles in nursery, reception and Year 1 settings, EYFS coordinator or phase leader positions, and progression to roles such as special educational needs coordinator (SENCo), literacy or maths lead, or senior leadership positions in primary schools.

The qualification also provides a foundation for further study and professional development, for example master’s level study in education, leadership and specialist early years qualifications, or routes into educational research, curriculum design and teacher training.
