What you'll study

The programme focuses on subject-specific pedagogy alongside core professional studies to prepare you for secondary classroom teaching. You will follow a course of study that typically includes: subject-specialist teaching methods; curriculum planning and assessment; behaviour management and classroom organisation; differentiation and inclusive practice; assessment for learning and exam preparation; use of technology in teaching; and statutory requirements such as safeguarding and the Prevent duty.

Training is school-led through the School Direct route, so the majority of your time is spent on placement in partnership secondary schools, with complementary university sessions that provide research-informed input, subject knowledge enhancement and assignments at postgraduate level. You will normally complete two contrasting placements (one in your main placement school and one in a different setting) to build experience across key stages and contexts.

Assessment combines practical classroom observation against the Teachers’ Standards, professional portfolio evidence, and academic assignments that contribute to the PGCE award. There is an emphasis on reflective practice, lesson evaluation, and developing subject-specific schemes of work.

Entry requirements

Typical entry requirements include a UK undergraduate degree (often a 2:2 or above) or an equivalent international qualification in a subject relevant to the secondary teaching specialism you intend to train in. Applicants must also meet GCSE-equivalent requirements in English and mathematics (and in some subjects, science) at the levels specified by national teacher-training frameworks.

In addition to academic qualifications, applicants are expected to have recent and relevant experience in a school or education setting to demonstrate suitability for teaching. You will need to satisfy statutory requirements: an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, occupational health clearance, and provide references. Shortlisted candidates are normally invited to interview and to undertake subject-knowledge and literacy/numeracy checks as part of selection.

Career prospects

Graduates leave with QTS and a PGCE, enabling them to teach in maintained schools, academies and many independent schools across the UK and internationally. Common early-career roles include classroom teacher in secondary schools, subject leader or curriculum coordinator. With experience, graduates often progress into senior leadership, department headships, special educational needs coordination, or pastoral and behaviour roles.

Skills gained on the programme also transfer to wider education-related careers such as educational consultancy, assessment and examination boards, teacher training and professional development, local authority roles, and policy or outreach positions.
