What you'll study

The PGCE Primary combines school-based professional practice with university-led sessions that develop subject knowledge, pedagogical skills and professional understanding. Core study areas include subject pedagogy for English, mathematics and science; teaching and learning in the foundation subjects (history, geography, art, music, design and technology, physical education and computing); assessment for learning; behaviour management; inclusion and differentiation; and child development including the Early Years Foundation Stage where appropriate.

Students follow a programme of taught modules and a professional portfolio that demonstrates achievement against the Teachers’ Standards. Typical elements are:

• Subject and curriculum studies – pedagogy and sequencing for primary subjects and cross-curricular planning.
• Professional studies – assessment, safeguarding, classroom management, working with parents and professional responsibilities.
• Inclusion and special educational needs – adapting teaching for diverse learners, disability equality and targeted interventions.
• School placements – two substantial placements in partnership schools, with graded lesson observations, mentoring and progressive responsibility for classes.
• Research-in-practice – engagement with educational research and reflection on classroom outcomes to inform teaching decisions.

Assessment is through observed teaching, assignments linked to practice, a professional portfolio and completion of the statutory requirements for QTS as set out by the national framework.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically expected to hold a UK undergraduate degree at an honours level or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution. Successful applicants will normally meet minimum GCSE (or equivalent) standards in English and mathematics; some programmes also require science at GCSE or equivalent. Relevant experience in school or with children is usually expected and should be evidenced in the application and references.

All offers are conditional on satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance, occupational health clearance and references. International applicants should check specific English language requirements and visa guidance.

Career prospects

Graduates of the PGCE Primary typically proceed into employment as primary classroom teachers in maintained, academy and independent schools, gaining Qualified Teacher Status. With classroom experience, teachers often progress to roles such as subject leader, phase leader, special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) or senior leadership positions. The qualification also supports related careers in education leadership, curriculum development, educational consultancy, and further professional study such as national professional qualifications (NPQs) or a Master’s degree.
