What you'll study

This combined program blends core engineering science and design with practical professional practice. Early years focus on mathematics, physics, computing and engineering fundamentals such as statics, dynamics, materials, thermodynamics and electrical circuits. Mid-stage study introduces discipline-specific subjects (depending on the engineering specialism chosen) such as fluid mechanics, structural analysis, control systems, instrumentation, manufacturing processes, and engineering design methods.

Integrated throughout the degree are modules in engineering professional practice, project management, ethics and sustainability, technical communication and workplace health and safety. The honours year requires an independent research or design project demonstrating advanced technical competence and problem solving.

The Diploma of Professional Practice (Co‑op) component formalises workplace learning: students complete a sequence of industry placements, reflective practice subjects and professional development activities designed to build practical skills, industry awareness and employability. Placements are arranged in collaboration with industry partners and may occur in regional, mining, energy, infrastructure and manufacturing sectors where the university has established links.

Entry requirements

• Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent senior secondary qualification with passes in mathematics (typically calculus or advanced mathematics) and a physical science such as physics or chemistry.
• Meeting the university’s standard English language requirements; international applicants will need an approved English test score or equivalent evidence of proficiency.
• Applicants with a vocational diploma, TAFE qualification, or relevant industry experience may be considered through recognised prior learning and pathway arrangements.
• Mature‑age applicants are welcomed and assessed on a combination of academic background and work experience; some applicants may be invited to interview or to provide a portfolio of relevant work.

Graduates are prepared for roles as professional engineers in sectors such as resources and mining, energy, infrastructure and transport, manufacturing, civil construction and utilities. Typical entry-level positions include graduate design engineer, project engineer, site engineer, process engineer, control and instrumentation engineer, and maintenance engineer.

The co‑op placements give graduates an advantage in securing graduate programs and industry roles by providing documented workplace experience and professional networks. Many graduates progress to chartered status through Engineers Australia pathways and move into senior technical, project management or specialist consulting roles, or continue with postgraduate study in engineering or management.
