What you'll study

This programme develops a critical and historically informed understanding of education. Core themes include philosophy of education, sociology of education, psychology of learning, comparative and historical perspectives, and the role of education in social and cultural development. You will study advanced research methods and statistics for educational research and complete a substantial research project or thesis under academic supervision.

• Philosophy of Education — theories of knowledge, ethics and purpose in schooling; contemporary debates about educational aims.
• Sociology and Policy of Education — social stratification, equity, access, and the relationship between education and society.
• Educational Psychology — theories of learning and development, motivation, assessment and learner differences.
• Curriculum Theory and Development — principles of curriculum design, evaluation and reform in local and international contexts.
• Research Methods in Education — qualitative and quantitative approaches, research design, data collection and analysis.
• Seminars and Electives — topical seminars such as comparative education, educational ethics, or leadership in education; electives allow specialisation.
• Master’s Thesis / Research Project — an independent research study that demonstrates mastery of theory and method and contributes to knowledge in educational foundations.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in education or a related discipline. Candidates with degrees in social sciences, humanities or allied professions who can demonstrate relevant experience in education may also be considered. You will typically need to provide academic transcripts, a statement of purpose outlining your research interests, and references from academic or professional referees. Where instruction or supervision will be in a language other than the applicant’s first language, proof of proficiency in the language of instruction may be required.
