What you'll study

The programme integrates advanced musical training with subject pedagogy and supervised teaching practice across a broad curriculum. You study musicianship (music theory, ear training, aural skills), applied instrumental or vocal tuition, ensemble performance (choirs, bands, orchestras) and conducting. Core pedagogical modules cover music didactics, curriculum and assessment, classroom management, special needs education in music and approaches to inclusive teaching.

• Applied performance: weekly one-to-one tuition on your main instrument or voice, technique development and repertoire studies.
• Ensemble and rehearsal leadership: participation in choirs, bands or orchestras and training in leading rehearsals.
• Musicianship and composition: harmony, counterpoint, arranging, composition and improvisation.
• Music technology: basics of music production, notation software and using technology in teaching.
• Pedagogy and didactics: subject-specific teaching methods, lesson planning, assessment, and development of long-term teaching projects.
• Teaching practice: several supervised school placements of increasing responsibility, with reflection seminars and feedback from mentor teachers.
• Extended project/thesis: an independent project or written thesis that addresses a practical or research-based question in music education.

Entry requirements

Admission normally requires completion of upper secondary education (or equivalent) and demonstrated musical ability. Applicants can expect to provide a portfolio and to attend an audition and/or pass a practical test in performance, musicianship and sometimes basic theory. For teaching in Swedish schools, proficiency in Swedish is required; international applicants should check language requirements and whether preparatory Swedish language study is needed. Additional requirements may include specific upper secondary courses depending on the national admission rules.

Graduates are prepared for certified roles as music teachers in primary and secondary schools and for positions in municipal music schools.
