What you'll study

Coursework and practical activities emphasise both musical and technical fluency. Core topics and experiences include:

• Music theory, arranging and music history
• Private applied lessons and ensemble performance participation
• Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and MIDI systems
• Analog and digital recording technology and studio production techniques
• Live sound reinforcement and on-set audio work for film
• Composition, popular songwriting and music production
• Producing surround sound mixes, troubleshooting sound systems and performing minor repairs
• Hands-on recording from freshman year, including work on more than 100 recitals and concerts across campus and venues
• Classical or Jazz applied emphasis depending on instrument

Entry requirements

Applicants enter through Shenandoah Conservatory; incoming students should consult the Conservatory admissions office and their academic advisor for specific admission and audition expectations and for guidance on declaring minors. Conservatory minors require approval from the Division/Department Chair and some minors require auditions.

Career prospects

Graduates typically work in recording studios or live-sound contexts as engineers, producers, live sound reinforcement engineers, musicians, composers or performers. The programme emphasises internship and real-world experience with opportunities to design internships in music hubs such as New York City, Los Angeles and Nashville. Alumni have gone on to roles with recording studios, touring and corporate music organizations and have worked with a variety of artists and ensembles.
