What you'll study

Coursework and activities centre on instrumental/vocal jazz performance, improvisation, ensemble participation and practical industry skills. Students work closely with UIndy jazz faculty and encounter guest artists such as Emmet Cohen, Dave Stryker and Dick Oatts. The programme gives students chances to perform regularly on and off campus, to compose and arrange, and to gain experience booking, promoting and recording their own groups. Curriculum and general education requirements are provided through separate programme and university guides.

Entry requirements

Career prospects

• Band leader and performing jazz artist who composes, records and tours or presents work in clubs, concert halls and festivals while developing an audience and promotion strategy.
• Professional sideman or sidewoman performing in jazz, blues, R&B, rock and commercial ensembles at venues ranging from clubs and festivals to private and corporate events.
• Adjunct private teacher offering instrumental lessons or instruction in jazz style and improvisation.
• Adjunct director of middle or high school jazz ensembles.
