What you'll study

This Diploma combines applied language skills with literary and cultural study. You will cover core areas such as close reading of prose and poetry, fundamentals of grammar and linguistics, and practical writing across forms (creative, academic and professional). Modules emphasise critical thinking, research methods and presentation skills, and include assessed coursework, group projects and a practical portfolio.

• Literary Studies: key texts and approaches to reading fiction, drama and poetry; contextual and thematic analysis.
• Writing and Composition: creative writing, essay and report writing, editing and proofreading techniques.
• Language and Communication: basic linguistics, discourse, language variation, and effective oral communication.
• Media and Digital Skills: writing for online platforms, basic content creation and use of digital tools for research and presentation.
• Research and Project Work: planning and delivering a sustained project or portfolio that demonstrates applied skills and subject understanding.
• Work Placement/Employability: opportunities for short placement experience or industry-linked projects to develop workplace competencies.

Entry requirements

Entry is normally from applicants who have completed secondary qualifications such as GCSEs plus one or two Level 3 qualifications (for example A-levels, BTEC or equivalent). Typical requirements include a pass in English at GCSE grade equivalent and evidence of ability to study at diploma level. Mature students with relevant work or life experience are welcome, and some applicants may be asked to provide a short written sample or attend an interview.

Specific requirements may vary; applicants whose first language is not English are normally asked to demonstrate proficiency in English through an approved test or equivalent qualifications.

Career prospects

Graduates of the Diploma commonly move into support roles in education, publishing, communications and media, or progress to related roles in administration, marketing and customer-facing services. Typical entry-level jobs include editorial assistant, copywriter trainee, learning support assistant, content creator and community or communications officer.
