What you'll study

This diploma combines practical workshop skills with design and industry awareness. Typical modules include:

• Garment construction: industrial and domestic machine use, seams, finishes and quality control.
• Pattern cutting and draping: basic block development, modifications for fit and style, and draping on dress forms.
• Textiles and materials: fibre and fabric properties, selection for end use, care labelling and sustainable choices.
• Fashion illustration and CAD: sketching techniques, technical flats and introductory computer-aided design for fashion.
• Fashion communication and trend awareness: moodboards, trend research, branding and developing a concise design brief.
• Production and quality assurance: introduction to factory processes, costing basics, and preparing for small-batch production.
• Portfolio and final major project: a practical project that demonstrates design development, workmanship and presentation skills suitable for interviews or higher education applications.
• Workplace experience and employability: opportunities for industry visits, short placements or simulated client briefs to build workplace skills.

Teaching is delivered through workshops, tutor-led demonstrations, studio tutorials and project assessments. Practical work is assessed alongside sketchbooks and a professional-style portfolio.

Entry requirements

Applicants are usually expected to have a combination of formal qualifications and evidence of aptitude or interest in fashion. Typical entry criteria include:

• General level: GCSEs at passes including English and/or a related subject; or an equivalent Level 1/Level 2 qualification.
• Portfolio: a small selection of sketches, photographs of made garments or creative work is helpful and may be requested.
• Interview or trial: applicants may be invited to a short interview or practical workshop to demonstrate basic sewing and motivation.
• Mature learners: applicants without formal qualifications but with relevant experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

• Junior garment maker or machinist in studios, bespoke workshops or production settings.
