What you'll study

The diploma covers the fundamental technical and professional skills used in everyday accounting practice. You will study double-entry bookkeeping, preparation of financial statements, management accounting techniques (including costing and budgeting), basic taxation principles, and the foundations of auditing and internal controls. The programme emphasises practical skills such as spreadsheet modelling, use of popular accounting software, payroll processing and record-keeping.

Typical modules include:

• Introduction to Financial Accounting – ledgers, trial balance, preparing income statements and balance sheets.
• Management Accounting and Budgeting – costing methods, variance analysis and short-term decision-making tools.
• Taxation Basics – fundamental concepts of personal and small business tax obligations.
• Computerised Accounting and Spreadsheets – practical use of spreadsheets and common accounting packages for day-to-day tasks.
• Payroll and Statutory Obligations – processing payroll, statutory deductions and record compliance.
• Business Law and Professional Ethics – legal environment for businesses and ethical considerations in accounting.
• Auditing Fundamentals and Internal Control – introductory audit concepts and designing basic control systems.
• Practical Project or Work-placement – applied project or short placement to consolidate workplace skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically expected to have a recognised secondary school qualification with passes in maths and English at grade-equivalent level. Mature applicants with relevant work experience in administration, finance or payroll are welcomed and may be admitted through an interview or assessment. Candidates without formal qualifications may be required to complete an initial numeracy or literacy assessment to ensure they can cope with the programme demands.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for a range of entry-level roles in accounting and finance. Common job destinations include accounts assistant, bookkeeper, payroll administrator, purchase/sales ledger clerk and finance support roles in charities, SMEs and public sector organisations. The diploma also provides a pathway to further study or professional qualifications; many students progress to higher-level diplomas, HNDs, or start professional accounting technician programmes, which can lead to ACCA, CIMA, AAT or similar professional accreditation.
