What you'll study

The diploma combines practical workshops, project work and theory to develop core filmmaking skills. You will study camera operation and cinematography, sound recording and design, lighting, editing and post-production, as well as screenplay writing, directing and production management. Modules emphasise learning by doing: you will take part in a series of short film productions from development through to final delivery, producing work for festivals, online platforms and your personal showreel.

• Introduction to Film Production – fundamentals of production workflow, crew roles and on-set protocols.
• Cinematography and Camera Practice – camera operation, lenses, framing, movement and visual storytelling.
• Sound for Screen – location recording, microphone techniques, sound editing and design.
• Editing and Post-Production – non-linear editing systems, colour grading, basic VFX and delivery formats.
• Screenwriting and Script Development – structure, character, dialogue and writing for short-form drama and documentary.
• Directing Actors and Crew – rehearsal techniques, shot planning and leadership on set.
• Production Management and Budgeting – scheduling, risk assessment, legal and rights basics, and managing small crews.
• Final Project/Showreel – collaborative production of a short film or portfolio of work showcasing technical and creative skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically expected to hold a relevant Level 2/Level 3 qualification (for example GCSEs including passes in English and at least one other subject, a BTEC or equivalent), or demonstrate equivalent experience. A basic portfolio of short films, scripts or related creative work is usually required, along with an interview or practical assessment to establish suitability and commitment to production work.

Mature applicants without formal qualifications are welcome if they can show relevant practical experience or a strong portfolio. For applicants whose first language is not English, evidence of competence in English will be requested in line with standard practice for vocational programmes.
