What you'll study

The diploma balances studio design work with technical and theoretical modules. Core learning areas include conceptual design and drawing, technical graphics and CAD, building information modelling (BIM) fundamentals, construction technology and materials, and structural principles relevant to low-rise buildings. You will study environmental design and sustainability, planning and building regulations, and the history and theory of architecture to situate practice within broader cultural and regulatory contexts.

• BIM & Digital Workflows – introduction to BIM software, file management and collaborative workflows used in practice.
• Construction Technology & Materials – understanding assemblies, material properties and common construction methods.
• Structures & Environmental Design – basic structural concepts and passive design strategies for comfortable, efficient buildings.
• Professional Practice & Regulations – planning, building control, health and safety, procurement and client communication.
• Site Work & Visits – practical sessions and visits to building sites, manufacturers and architectural practices.
• Portfolio Development – compiling project work and preparing a portfolio and CV for employment or further study.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have completed secondary education with passes in relevant subjects such as art, design, mathematics or technology. Typical entry is through a combination of academic qualifications and a portfolio demonstrating creative potential and practical skills. Mature applicants with relevant work or life experience are considered. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate sufficient English language competence as required by the college.

Career prospects

Graduates leave prepared for technician and support roles within the built environment as well as further study. Common entry-level roles include architectural technician, CAD/BIM technician, junior draughtsperson, model-maker, and site or project assistant positions within architectural firms, engineering consultancies and construction companies. The diploma also provides a pathway to higher-level qualifications (such as a foundation degree or bachelor’s programme) for those aiming to become registered architects or to specialise in fields like sustainability, conservation or construction management.
