What you'll study

The program comprises four graduate-level courses (15 credits), including a six-credit practicum. Core courses are:

• KMB 511: Theories of Knowledge Mobilization in Research Settings (3 credits) — theory and practice around creating, synthesizing, translating and disseminating knowledge in science and social science research contexts; ethics and equity questions about what research should be mobilized; integrating KMb into research design; identifying barriers and facilitators; tools and evaluation techniques. Students produce a KMb plan and an evaluation design.
• KMB 515: Theories of Knowledge Mobilization in Applied Settings (3 credits) — how sectors such as health, social services and non-profits engage with and inform research; identifying audiences and barriers/facilitators for applying research; partnership-building; tools and evaluation techniques. Students create a KMb package and design its evaluation.
• KMB 520: Science Communication (3 credits) — practical writing and communication strategies for online and print media (blogs, newspaper columns) and visual approaches like infographics, with emphasis on conveying complex scientific material to wider audiences.
• KMB 530: Knowledge Mobilization Practicum (6 credits) — a multi-week placement with an organization whose mandate is to translate knowledge into action. Projects may be remote, with a student’s employer, or organized by the practicum instructor. Possible outputs include organizational KMb strategies, communication materials, media columns, or participation in a virtual internship. Deliverables include a project portfolio, preliminary evaluations and a reflective journal linking theory to practice.

Program schedule: the first 12 weeks (Fall) cover the three theoretical and communication courses; an additional 12 weeks (Winter) are dedicated to the practicum.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in any discipline from a recognized university with at least a B average in the final two years. A statement of interest (maximum 500 words) explaining objectives for the program and plans for completing the practicum is required. Applicants from non-English or non-French curricula must provide proof of English proficiency according to the institution’s Academic Calendar. Priority is given to applicants who have knowledge of research methods regularly used in Psychology, Sports Studies and Biology (Health).
