A combined MSAT/MPH program that trains clinicians in athletic training while giving population-level public health skills. Suited to students who want both hands-on athletic training competencies and a broader view of health systems, social determinants, and outcome measurement.

What you'll study

The MSAT requires 70 credits and the MPH 46 credits, with a 9-credit overlap between the two programs. Students complete clinical field experience and research requirements for the athletic training degree in addition to the MPH curriculum. The 9-credit overlap is satisfied by:

  • AT 501 – Emergency Care (counts as a public-health elective)
  • AT 571 – Sports Nutrition (counts as a public-health elective)
  • PH 535 – Health Communication (may be applied within the AT program in place of AT 799, AT 720 – Wilderness First Responder, or HP 550 – GEL)

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet pre-requisite coursework for the MSAT. Required undergraduate courses and typical credit expectations listed by the program are:

  • General Biology with lab — 4 credits
  • General Chemistry with lab — 4 credits
  • Human Anatomy with lab — 4 credits
  • Human Physiology with lab — 4 credits
  • One physics course with lab (two-semester sequence recommended) — 4–8 credits
  • Statistics — 3 credits
  • Social/Behavioral Science — 3 credits
  • Psychology — 3 credits
  • One of: Biomechanics, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Physics II — 4 credits

When anatomy and physiology are taken as a combined course, two semesters are required to satisfy the anatomy and physiology prerequisite. Students must maintain the required GPAs in both programs.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles that bridge clinical athletic training and public health, including population or clinical research, leadership in health administration, and community health promotion. The combined training is intended to enable athletic trainers to influence population health, health systems, and outcome tracking in innovative ways.

Scholarships & funding angle

Students should consult Shenandoah University for information about scholarships, assistantships, or other funding opportunities. Because the program blends clinical placements and online coursework, investigate funding and logistical support for experiential components and any eligibility criteria tied to dual-degree enrollment.
