A practice-focused graduate degree advancing craft, contemporary technique and real-world presentation skills for composers of 20th- and 21st-century art music. Best suited to composers aiming for professional composition work, performances of their music, or further graduate study in composition.

What you'll study

Study combines composition creation, performance opportunities, and focused research in contemporary art music. Students work on large-scale original instrumental and vocal compositions, develop advanced theory, analysis, research and technology skills, and advance their ability to present new music in professional and competitive venues. The program offers readings and masterclasses with visiting contemporary-art-music artists, performances with the in-house EDGE Ensemble, and participation in Shenandoah New Music events (including the bi-annual Pulitzer Prize Composer Festival and special activities such as New Music in New York).

Entry requirements

Admission is competitive and requires an audition; the conservatory advises early application and audition registration because schedules fill quickly. Prospective applicants should consult the Conservatory Graduate Application Information for application procedures.

Career prospects

Graduates exit prepared for professional work in composition or to pursue further graduate study. The program’s emphasis on creation, presentation and performance—plus opportunities to have works read by the conservatory orchestra, wind ensemble, choir and the EDGE Ensemble—supports careers that rely on composing, presenting and securing performances of new art-music.

Scholarships & funding angle

The program page does not list specific scholarships; Shenandoah offers institutional learning support such as peer tutoring, a Writing Center and the Math Enrichment Center to help students succeed academically. Applicants should contact Shenandoah Conservatory’s admissions or financial aid offices for current information on scholarships, assistantships and other funding opportunities.
