What you'll study

Coursework combines core music education subjects, musicianship and elective study. Sample courses and structure listed by year:

• First Year (9 credits): MUED 601 Research in Music Education (3), MUED 605 Curriculum and Assessment (3), Music Elective (MULT/MUT C/MUPP) (2), Workshop (1), with remedial theory if needed.
• Even Year (10 credits): MUED 603 History and Philosophy (3), MUED 620 Contemporary Issues (3), Music Elective (2), Workshop (1), plus RTP credit sequence.
• Odd Year (9 credits): MUPP 603 Musician Teacher (3), MUCO 5XX Conducting (2), Music Elective (2), Workshop (1), plus RTP credit.

The RTP is a 1-credit sequence that spans the second summer (initial credit), a fall proposal, a spring teaching implementation, and a final summer to complete and present the project. Students also use facilities such as the Collins Learning Music Suite for multimedia, video capture of teaching, and access to Orff and classroom instruments.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to be practicing music educators. Most hold a baccalaureate in music education or are licensed teachers. Admission requires documentation of at least one year of elementary or secondary school teaching experience in a public or private school. Specific Shenandoah Conservatory teacher licensure requirements are addressed through completion of the undergraduate music education degree. Graduates take roles as public school music teachers, music supervisors, program coordinators and administrators, and some continue to further graduate study in music or school leadership.
