TWU’s Master of Social Work is a hybrid-format graduate programme focused on inclusive, practice-oriented social work education. It suits students seeking clinical and community social work roles who need scheduling flexibility—both applicants with a non‑social‑work bachelor’s (Generalist) and BSW holders (Advanced Standing) are accommodated.

What you'll study

Curriculum structure differs by entry pathway but leads to the same MSW degree. Full‑time Generalist students complete 10 foundation courses (30 credit hours) in year one and 10 advanced courses (30 credit hours) in year two. Full‑time Advanced Standing students who qualify complete 10 advanced courses (30 credit hours); the first‑year Generalist requirements are waived for them. Advanced‑year students must also select one elective.

Field education is a central component: students undertake agency internships supervised by agency field instructors to apply classroom learning with client populations, progressing to greater responsibility over time. The programme provides a Field Education Manual, Field Application, Learning Contract, Internship Evaluation and the current CSWE Competencies to guide placements.

Entry requirements

There are two entry routes: applicants with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than social work enter the two‑year Generalist program; applicants with an accredited BSW may qualify for Advanced Standing and complete the program in one year. Full‑time status is specified for the described credit loads. Important application timing noted on the programme page: Fall 2026 admissions were closed; applications received after May 8, 2026 were considered for Fall 2027. Info sessions for the Fall 2027 cycle were scheduled for September 2026. The programme lists a priority application deadline of Jan. 22, 2027 (decisions by Feb. 5, 2027), a secondary deadline of March 19, 2027 (decisions by April 2, 2027), and rolling review after March 19 as space allows.

Career prospects

TWU prepares graduates for a range of social work settings. The programme states graduates work in hospitals, schools, mental health centers, child welfare agencies and veterans’ services. Degree holders are prepared for roles such as mental health therapist, case manager and child and family social worker.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Tuition and fees vary by residency, program length and credit load; TWU provides a tuition estimator for current costs. Example Fall 2024 estimates from the programme page: full‑time Generalist (12 credit hours) — Texas residents $6,102.00, non‑residents $11,022.00; full‑time Advanced Standing (15 credit hours) — Texas residents $7,494.00, non‑residents $13,644.00. MSW scholarship opportunities include an automatic consideration for a $1,000 award at program start (up to five students per year, generally favoring those with a 4.0 GPA in the last 60 undergraduate credit hours). MSW students are also matched to Division of Social Work scholarships via the General Scholarship Application (open July 1 to March 1) with awards commonly ranging $1,000–$5,000 per year and many renewable for up to two years. The TWU Graduate Student Scholarship requires departmental nomination, a minimum 3.2 GPA in the last 60 credit hours and enrollment of at least 5 credits per semester. Most scholarships are open to international students unless FAFSA is explicitly required, though full institutional financial aid for international students is currently not available.
