What you'll study

Coursework begins with shared first- and second-year classes alongside architecture students, then moves to specialised BA in Design studies in the third and fourth years. The curriculum emphasises studio-based learning, creative problem solving, verbal and nonverbal communication, and collaboration with architecture students. Students develop abilities in analysis, interpretation, self-directed studio practice, and applied design fabrication and testing.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be generally admitted to Tuskegee University (external applicants apply through the Office of Admissions). All candidates for the BA in Design must submit a Design Review Submission Form. Admission to the programme requires:

• Two letters of recommendation from faculty or others who know the applicant academically or in research;
• A resume and a statement of interest;
• A portfolio of design work (submitted electronically, by mail, or in person—arrange in-person delivery with the Department of Architecture);
• An interview with the student Selection Committee; and
• Approval by the TSACS admissions/Design Review Committee and the Dean.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles across applied arts and design fields. The programme explicitly equips students for work as practicing applied artists, interior designers, and industrial designers, and for interdisciplinary design positions that value creative problem solving and studio experience.
