A two-year graduate programme that deepens theory and research skills in interpersonal, organizational and rhetorical communication. Suited to students wanting to apply communication methods to leadership, healthcare, policy, ministry or further doctoral study, with options for thesis or non-thesis tracks.

Programme overview

ACU’s Master of Arts in Communication is a 36-credit-hour graduate degree typically completed over two years. The curriculum blends theory, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and applied study so students can shape communication strategies that foster social and organizational change. Students design a personalized plan of study and choose either a thesis route (original research, for those considering doctoral study) or a non-thesis route (preparation for advanced professional roles with an oral comprehensive exam).

What you'll study

The programme divides into a 12-credit-hour core and 24 credit hours of electives selected with a program director. Core topics include:

  • Quantitative research methods: scientific method, survey and lab research, sampling, interviewing techniques and questionnaire construction.
  • Qualitative research methods grounded in ethics and philosophy for problem identification, question design, assessment and data collection.
  • Verbal and non-verbal interaction: meanings, roles in persuasion and information, and functions in interpersonal, group and organizational contexts.
  • Rhetorical criticism for analyzing single and multiple symbolic events.

Electives allow application-focused study in areas such as leadership and politics, gender and intercultural relations, nonprofit and organizational communication, and health-care communication. Research opportunities include presenting at professional conferences and study-abroad exploration of intercultural communications (for example, a programme in Oxford, England). Graduate assistantships may involve teaching undergraduate speech courses, tutoring at the Speaking Center or assisting faculty research.

Entry requirements

  • Online application and $50 application fee.
  • Official transcript(s) in English showing an earned bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent.
  • Cumulative undergraduate approximate B average or above in the area of focus or a related area, with evidence of an overall productive GPA.
