  • Clinical Assessment

Training covers individual and group counseling, clinical interviewing, psychological testing, professional issues and ethics, and research design and analysis to support either research careers or further doctoral study.

Entry requirements

Applicants must submit an online application with a $50 fee and official transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. Unconditional admission generally requires an undergraduate GPA of 3.5–4.0; applicants with a 3.0–3.49 may be admitted on probation and must earn a B or above in the first four required courses or risk suspension. Three letters of recommendation are required, at least two from psychology faculty or psychologists.

Prerequisites: at least 12 undergraduate semester hours in psychology, including statistics, experimental psychology, abnormal psychology and one additional approved course (e.g., physiological or developmental psychology, cognition, principles of learning). Each prerequisite must have a grade of B or higher and be completed prior to beginning graduate coursework; they may not be taken concurrently. Applicants must submit a 600–800 word written statement outlining professional goals and reasons for entering ACU’s psychology program.

Non-native English speakers must pass an interview with two psychology faculty to demonstrate sufficient English and cultural competence for practicum client work; international applicants must also meet the university’s English language test requirements. The department does not consider the GRE or other tests for admissions.

Career prospects

The program prepares graduates for supervised clinical work in practicum and clinic settings and provides research training aimed at careers in applied psychology or as preparation for doctoral programs. Students gain practical skills useful for managing private practice work and present research at professional conferences with faculty mentorship.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Most graduate students qualify for federal student loans to cover tuition and living expenses. The department and college provide research and travel funding for students presenting at conferences, and additional travel support is available via the Graduate Student Association. Graduate assistantships are available to incoming full-time students and typically involve 10 hours per week of research, teaching, service or clinic work; the GA award is $1,650 per semester (paid bi-weekly) and is generally available for up to four semesters.
