What you'll study

Coursework is delivered as Single Subject or Multiple Subject credential pathways with a range of content-area options (Multiple Subject, Social Science/History, English, Spanish, Art, Music, Math, Science, Physical Education). The program groups study into prerequisite courses and credential‑specific required courses.

• Required for Multiple Subject credential: Teaching of Reading: Learning; Teaching of Reading: Reading; Educational Psychology; Curriculum and Instruction in Elementary Education; Inclusion, Collaboration, and the Exceptional Child; TESOL in Multicultural Classrooms; Student Teaching in Elementary School; Seminar in Directed Student Teaching.
• Required for Single Subject credential: Educational Psychology; Curriculum and Instruction in Secondary Education; Inclusion, Collaboration, and the Exceptional Child; Adolescent Literacy; TESOL in Multicultural Classroom; Secondary Teaching Methods; Student Teaching in Secondary School; Seminar in Directed Student Teaching.

Entry requirements

Applicants should not currently hold a California teaching credential and must submit copies of CBEST/CSET results or proof of registration for those tests with their application. Prerequisite courses may be completed during undergraduate study or after graduation but must be finished before beginning the TCP sequence at SDCC.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to teach at elementary, middle, and high school levels and commonly progress into roles such as curriculum designer/writer, training specialist, educational consultant, public policy coordinator/analyst, nonprofit education administrator or director, and manager of public or in‑home daycare and preschool programs.
