What you'll study

The curriculum covers foundational elements of sustainability and how to integrate them into classroom practice. Core topics include:

• Interdependence of environment, economy and equity
• Historical development of sustainability education
• Fundamental scientific principles related to sustainability
• Systems thinking applied to learning and communities
• Building and sustaining community partnerships
• Strategies to incorporate sustainability across grade levels and subject areas

Entry requirements

Applicants complete an online application with essay questions and submit a resume/CV. A non-refundable $50 application fee applies. Official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions are required. Two letters of recommendation from professional or academic evaluators are required (not a relative). International applicants and applicants without a bachelor’s degree must meet additional requirements. Selected applicants will be interviewed by a faculty member. GRE or other standardized tests are not required.

Career prospects

Graduates gain the capacity to explain sustainability across contexts, integrate Educating for Sustainability (EFS) themes into curriculum, align EFS content with learning standards, lead sustainability initiatives in schools, and advocate for projects that advance sustainability in their communities.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Antioch University New England states that most students use financial aid and provides guidance on federal, state and private options. The Education division offers a 10% discount when three or more students from the same school or district enroll in AUNE Education MEd or certificate programs simultaneously (specific conditions apply). The published per-credit tuition for this certificate is $840 and the program totals 12 credits.
