What you'll study

The curriculum totals 48 credit hours made up of 15 credit hours of ASN-to-MSN bridge courses, 24 credit hours of core graduate coursework, and 9 credit hours within a chosen specialty track. Specialty tracks available are Nursing Education and Nursing Administration. Sample course topics listed in the program materials include:

• Advanced Nursing Practice Roles — an overview of graduate-level nursing roles with emphasis on specialty role issues such as ethics, scope of practice, and credentialing as students transition into their selected specialty.
• Healthcare Systems, Policy and Advocacy — study of health care organizations and delivery, public policy affecting nursing and health care, economic and organizational theory, current issues and trends in delivery, and the role of advanced practice nurses in political advocacy.
• Graduate Practicum — a supervised practicum with a preceptor where students synthesize knowledge and demonstrate skills relevant to their specialty.

Entry requirements

Admission requires an unencumbered RN license in the United States (including DC and US territories) or an unencumbered RN license in Canada. Applicants must have graduated from an ADN program or be an active ADN student in a nursing program affiliated with Baker College. Canadian RNs must complete practicum experiences under the supervision of a baccalaureate nurse licensed in Canada. The program notes that completing Baker’s RN to BSN program does not qualify Canadian graduates to sit for the US NCLEX-RN.

Career prospects

The program prepares RNs for expanded roles beyond direct patient care, including management and academic positions. Graduates commonly move into positions such as nurse manager, nursing director, chief nursing officer, or faculty roles in nursing education, depending on the selected specialty track in administration or education.
