Programme overview

The MSc in Polymer Materials Engineering at Shenkar prepares graduates for development and research positions across the polymers sector. The degree offers both a research (thesis) route and a final-project route, and is the only program of its kind in Israel. Graduates receive an M.Sc. in Polymer Materials Engineering and may proceed to doctoral study, including a joint PhD pathway with UMass Lowell.

What you'll study

The 36-credit programme is two years in length and combines coursework with either a research thesis or a final project. Teaching and research span three principal specialisations:

  • Sustainable polymers — sustainable polymer technologies, food and pharmaceutical packaging, sustainable production methods, and circular-economy design for polymer systems.
  • Polyfunctional polymers — multifunctional polymer materials such as biopolymers, antibacterial/antiviral polymers, electrically and opto-electronically conductive polymers, temperature/humidity/pH sensors and controlled-release systems.
  • Composite polymers — advanced fibre- and nano-reinforced composites (ceramic, metallic and polymeric nano-materials) for aerospace, marine, space and land-transport structural applications.

Entry requirements

The programme is intended for applicants holding a bachelor’s degree in polymer/materials engineering, chemical engineering, materials engineering, biotechnology engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, biology or physics. Exceptional undergraduate students may begin master-level study concurrently during their fourth year.

Career prospects

Graduates enter a wide range of roles across the polymers and plastics industries and in start-ups. The programme emphasises applied R&D and industry-relevant skills, supported by close ties to the local industry market. Graduates also have the option to continue to doctoral study.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Students who choose the research (thesis) track are eligible for a monthly scholarship. The department additionally provides benefits for students serving in the reserves and maintains industry collaborations that can support applied projects and placements.
