A two-year Composition Design course focused on practical composition and arrangement across genres, combining individual lessons with specialist classes and production practice. Suited to students aiming to become versatile composers, arrangers or sound designers for media, games and performance contexts.

What you'll study

The curriculum blends theory, applied technique and hands-on production. Students choose specialist classes and receive customised one-to-one tuition.

  • Specialist classes (four options): Sound Design (music, effects, narration, engineering skills), DAW (sequencing, recording, mixing, genre production), Writing (notation-based composition for classical and popular idioms), Electronic Organ (performance and arranging for electronic organ in classical and jazz/pop styles).
  • Individual lessons: Two personal lessons per week (one 45-minute primary subject, one 30-minute secondary subject; same class may be chosen twice; some subjects run as 90-minute group lessons).
  • Project work: Planning and producing the on-campus concert "NEXT DESIGN", where students compose assigned scene music and experience production processes.
  • Representative Year 1 subjects: Music Theory I-II, Classical Study I-II, Orchestration (Classical), Creative Piano, Repertoire Practice (electronic organ), Popular Study, Popular Songwriting Workshop.
  • Representative Year 2 subjects: Music Theory III-IV, Classical Study III-IV, Orchestration (Popular), Creative Piano, Repertoire Practice (electronic organ), Jazz Study, Mixing & Recording Practice, Film/Video/Game Music Production Practice.
  • Additional curriculum options: Popular Music History, Electronic Music Production, Music Engineering, Jazz History, ensemble and performance subjects, music transcription, solfège, conducting, music therapy basics, and a range of humanities and language electives.
