What you'll study

Coursework blends private lessons, ensemble performance and academic music subjects. Core areas described by the program include:

• Individual technique and 15 weeks of private lessons per semester on the principal instrument or voice
• Music theory, ear training and composition
• Music history
• Recording technology and music applications
• Participation in small and large ensembles and weekly performances, including concerts in the college auditorium

Facilities that support study: computer labs, two digital recording studios, practice rooms, a recital hall with two grand pianos and a 400-seat auditorium.

Entry requirements

Alongside general college admission rules, applicants must pass an audition on their principal instrument or voice and complete an entrance exam in theory and ear training. Music 502 (or CEGEP equivalent 551-004-VA) or equivalent recognized music training is recommended but not required.

Career prospects

The program is intended to prepare students for university and for a range of music-related pathways. Listed outcomes include audio recording, composition, music education, musicology, music theory, music therapy and performance, among other possibilities. Admitted students are advised to consult an academic advisor about university prerequisites for their chosen program.

Scholarships & funding angle

The department offers entrance scholarships to the student with the highest audition grade in each instrument or voice category across its music programs. Prospective students can also attend free instrument and vocal workshops to prepare for auditions.
