See the degree grade →A research doctorate in Chemical Engineering focused on multidisciplinary, future-facing topics such as process engineering, bioprocesses, materials manufacturing and energy technologies. Best suited to candidates with a clear research direction (or willingness to develop one with a supervisor), a 2:1 (or 1st) honours degree and an interest in industry-linked, sustainability-oriented research.
The programme is entirely research-led rather than module based. Suggested PhD topic ideas provided by the department include developing decarbonised polygeneration systems for hydrogen, chemicals and energy; sustainable production of functional materials from waste; and sustainable production of Vitamin K1. Research sits within and alongside groups such as Advanced Powertrain and Fuels, Bioprocess and Biopharmaceutical Engineering, Energy Efficient and Sustainable Technologies, the Experimental Techniques Centre, the Institute of Energy Futures, the Institute of Materials and Manufacturing, Mechanics of Solids and Structures, Two Phase Flow and Heat Transfer and the Wolfson Centre for Sustainable Materials Development and Processing. Training and support are available through Brunel’s Graduate School and the Researcher Development Programme, and you will have access to the library’s physical and electronic resources and dedicated research support staff.
The general requirement is normally a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (1st or 2:1). Admissions include an interview by at least two academic staff (remotely or face to face). Applicants must submit a personal statement and a research statement; applicants are advised to seek feedback from their proposed supervisor before submission.
Doctoral students receive tailored careers support during their PhD and for up to three years after completion, including one-to-one advice, events and workshops. Opportunities to gain paid work such as teaching and learning support may be available and are recognised as professional development.
