Programme overview

This four‑year honours degree includes an integrated foundation year that prepares students to enter the standard BSc Biomedical Science programme. The foundation year develops core scientific knowledge across anatomy, biology and chemistry while teaching essential laboratory practice, academic writing and numeracy skills. Teaching is practical and research‑informed, delivered in partnership with clinical laboratory staff and academics working on topics such as cancer, genetic birth defects, autoimmune disease and infectious disease control. The programme is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). An optional International Experience Year can be added for an extra year of study abroad. Part‑time study may be available.

What you'll study

The foundation year covers multidisciplinary fundamentals needed for progression to Year 1 of Biomedical Science, Medical Sciences or Pharmacology. Topics and skills explicitly described in the course text include:

• basic anatomical, biological and chemical principles relevant to medical sciences
• good laboratory practice and practical laboratory skills
• academic skills such as essay drafting and referencing
• numeracy and data skills including statistics, data handling and interrogation
• access to practical work in cell and molecular research laboratories, a Category 2 pathogen laboratory and a human anatomy suite with 3D anatomy visualisation and virtual dissection tools

Entry requirements

The foundation pathway is designed for applicants who do not currently meet the entry requirements for the three‑year degree or who lack the necessary qualifications for direct entry. Successful completion of the foundation year is required to progress into the first year of the BSc Biomedical Science (or to transfer into Medical Sciences or Pharmacology where the first year is shared).

Career prospects

The course emphasises transferable laboratory, analytical and research skills for roles in NHS pathology laboratories, medical research, the pharmaceutical industry, food science, public health, forensic science and the armed forces. The IBMS accreditation supports routes into clinical laboratory careers where applicable.
