What you'll study

The course uses small class sizes and practical learning. Highlights of the taught modules and clinical learning include:

• Health Prevention and Early Disease (DG1012) — introduction to routine primary care, preventive strategies, simulated simple restorations, basic oral/systemic disease science, dental caries science, cavity preparation, dental materials, and the practice of professionalism including reflective records.
• Dental Prevention and Disease Management in Dental Therapy (DG2023) — develops knowledge, skills and attitudes to work competently within the dental team; covers oral disease prevention, identification and management by Dental Care Professionals, professionalism, communication and applying research/evidence to practice.
• Dentistry in the Community and Complex Patients (DG3013) — builds clinical confidence and assessment of personal limits in the interest of patient care, preparation for independent clinical work, managing anxious or sedated patients, teamwork and communication across care settings, research skills and understanding responsibilities related to social and health inequalities, risk assessment and prevention strategies.
• Clinical skills training includes enhanced procedures such as administering inhalation sedation, removing sutures (post–wound check) and tooth whitening.

Career prospects

The programme prepares students for the role of dental therapist within primary care dental teams, emphasising supervised clinical patient care from early in the degree and training alongside other dental professionals to mirror future workplace practice.
