Programme overview

UCLan delivers the UK’s only distance-learning single-subject astronomy degree, available from introductory certificates through to an 18‑module BSc (Hons) in Astronomy. The BSc (Hons) is recognised by the Institute of Physics. Teaching is delivered online with study and tutorial support by email, telephone and online; students may also attend an optional weekend course at the Alston Observatory.

What you'll study

The programme spans entry-level certificates at HE Level 4 up to an honours degree. Courses take a quantitative scientific approach: students undertake experimental and observational work at a distance, practise library research and report writing, and use mathematics to solve problems from the outset. Core elements include astronomy, cosmology and astrobiology topics offered as standalone certificates and modules; the full honours route comprises up to 18 modules with prerequisite modules required for advanced awards. On-campus resources such as the Alston Observatory (including the 70 cm Moses Holden Telescope and a Discovery Dome planetarium system) support undergraduate teaching and final-year projects.

Entry requirements

Entry point certificates are designed for applicants with no prior astronomy knowledge. For these astronomy courses, applicants require GCSE Grade C in maths and English or an equivalent qualification. Progression to advanced awards and the BSc route requires completion of specified prerequisite modules; UCLan assesses each application on its merits.

Career prospects

The programme develops scientific skills applicable to research and technical roles and can be a stepping stone to postgraduate study.
