What you'll study

The course provides a solid grounding in core theoretical areas—syntax, phonology and semantics—alongside training in research methods and working with primary linguistic data. Optional modules cover topics such as morphology, historical and typological linguistics, sociolinguistics, language planning and language revitalisation. Students also undertake intensive language study to reach an intermediate-level command of one or more Asian, Middle Eastern or African languages; a compulsory Summer Abroad language module is part of the intensive language provision.

Entry requirements

Applications are considered from candidates with a 2:2 undergraduate degree (or international equivalent) or higher. Admissions decisions also take into account the supporting statement and other application elements. References are optional but may strengthen applications from applicants below a 2:2 or with non-traditional qualifications. See SOAS pages for international and English language requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates leave with linguistic, cultural and transferable skills in communication, analysis and problem solving. The programme is intended both as professional preparation for language-related careers focussed on the relevant regions and as preparation for research degrees. Recent employers of graduates from the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics include organisations such as Amnesty International, BBC World Service, Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Google, UN agencies, media outlets and NGOs, among others.
