What you'll study

The linguistics component develops an understanding of universal language structure and trains students in analysis of sound systems and semantics. Modules may cover phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, historical linguistics, semantics (study of meaning), language and social communication, and the structure of an African or Asian language. Introductory units are assessed in end‑of‑year exams; other modules can include written exams, practical tests, coursework and essays.

Typical A level offer: BBB; contextual offer: BBC. For combined degrees with differing requirements the higher subject requirement applies; combinations available with this programme span AAB–BBB. International and alternative entry conditions are set out separately by SOAS.

Career prospects

Graduates leave with linguistic and cultural knowledge plus skills in written and oral communication, analysis and problem solving. Recent employers of graduates from the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics include international NGOs, media outlets, government departments, diplomatic services, consultancy firms and tech companies.
