What you'll study

The curriculum totals 36 credits divided into four areas: foundational courses (6 credits), concentration core courses (15 credits), theology courses (6 credits), and research courses (9 credits) that lead into and support the dissertation. Course work aims to deepen understanding in church history, theology and social-science approaches to missiology, culminating in advancement to candidacy, dissertation research and an oral dissertation defense before the doctoral committee.

Entry requirements

Applicants must normally hold a master’s degree or its equivalent appropriate to the DIS from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.25. Candidates should demonstrate three years of cross-cultural or multicultural ministry experience. If English is not the applicant’s first language, proof of English proficiency is required. Biola may consider applicants who do not meet the degree or GPA floor on a case-by-case basis; contact the Talbot Doctoral Programs Office for guidance. The application requires submission of official transcripts and a non-refundable $65 application fee. General application deadline for fall admission is February 15.

Career prospects

The DIS prepares graduates for a range of intercultural and leadership roles. Common pathways identified by the program include leadership in mission organizations, missionary service, academic teaching positions in non-Western settings, missions pastor or church leadership, and founding or leading missions-related or international organizations and businesses.
