What you'll study

The curriculum consists of four graduate-level courses (12 credits) that cover practical and managerial aspects of information security. Core topics listed by the program include:

• Designing, implementing and managing enterprise-wide computer networks
• Developing secure information systems for enterprises
• Making effective, reasoned and justifiable ethical (moral) IT decisions

Courses are part of the MSc CIS course offerings; students take the same classes as MSc CIS peers. Course lists and program regulations are available from academic advisors and the program calendar.

Entry requirements

Admission requires a baccalaureate degree in a related area or equivalent education and experience. Applicants should consult the program admission page for the full set of requirements and submit applications by the stated deadlines.

Career prospects

Graduates qualify for a range of specialist IT security roles. The program identifies potential positions such as computer security specialist, computer specialist, information technology specialist, security analyst and systems analyst. Additional roles mentioned include network security engineer, ethical (white-hat) hacker, security consultant, security auditor, incident responder, forensic analyst, risk assessment analyst, security architect and compliance analyst.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Program fees, application and admission charges are listed on the AU site and vary by residency. For the 2026–2027 fee year the program provides per-course tuition figures and an estimated total for a student taking all courses through AU; Indigenous Canadian graduate students are eligible for a 10% reduction on the tuition portion of AU graduate course costs starting Sep. 1, 2026.
